at the end of 2022 the chinese entertainment company 'sunrise productions' revealed their plans to debut a girlgroup in korea under their newly established korean branch. however, as soon as they clarified that all members would be of chinese origin and that the group wouldn't have a single korean member, k-netz already began to harshly criticize their plans, arguing whether the group could even be called a k-pop group. nevertheless, undeterred by the criticism sunrise productions proceeded with their plans. having a clear goal in mind. ​

throughout the entire year of 2023, they revealed each member one by one through individual solo albums, including promotions and other short predebut content like introduction and cover videos. the idea behind this was to introduce and slowly build the lore of the group, as well as making the members hopefully well known enough in korea, to facilitate a smoother and more successful full group debut.

coven officially debuted on april 23, 2024 with their first mini album 'nightfall'.
